Brown Pelican
Diving from great heights, the pelican plunges headfirst into
the water and scoops up fish into the expandable pouch beneath
its bill. When the water drains out, the pelican throws its head
back and swallows. Brown Pelicans were once in grave danger due
to the effects of pesticides. Thanks to conservation efforts,
these amazing birds are now often seen along our shores.
Look For: A very large, stocky bird with gray-brown body, long
bill, and pouch under bill. Adults have light yellow crown. In
summer, back of neck is chestnut brown; in winter, changes to
white. Flocks fly in straight lines, often gliding just above
the water.
Length: 45-54".
Habitat: Coasts, beaches, bays.
Range: Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf coasts.
