House Finch
The House Finch was introduced from the western United States to
the East Coast by being freed from a cage on Long Island only
fifty years ago. It has since become a common sight throughout
the East. It is found in backyards and cities and will nest
anywhere that is handy: in flowerpots, on buildings, or in other
birds' nests.
Look For: The male is brown with orange to rosy-red on head,
throat, breast, and rump. Heavy brown streaks mark the
underparts. The female is brown but has no red.
Length: 5-6".
Habitat: Cities, suburbs, fields, desert brush.
Range: Southern Canada and south throughout most of U.S.
