Northern
Cardinal
The Northern Cardinal gets its
name from the red robes used by cardinals in the Roman Catholic
Church. Cardinals have become increasingly common in northern
areas, perhaps as a result of global warming. This adaptable
bird breeds and winters in the same place.
Look For: The male is bright red
with a black face, feathered red crest, and a cone-shaped red
bill. The female has a pink bill and is grayish with dull red on
crest, wings, and tail.
Length: 8-9".
Habitat: Woods, shrubbery, parks,
gardens.
Range: Eastern U.S. and west to
Arizona. |
