Manta
Mantas are the largest and most spectacular of all the rays.
Their diamond-shaped disks may be as much as 22 feet across.
They live near the surface of the open ocean, and in spite of
their size are known to leap from the water. They strain tiny
organisms out of the water to feed and are harmless to humans.
Look For: A huge, diamond-shaped ray. Large flap on each side of
mouth.
Length: Width of disk: 20'.
Habitat: Warm open ocean, coastlines.
Range: North Carolina to Brazil, Bermuda, Gulf of Mexico. |
