Whale Shark


The Whale Shark, the largest fish in the world, feeds on small crustaceans and fishes that it gulps in mouthfuls and strains through a special structure between its gills. It is known to reach lengths of 45 feet. There have been reports of Whale Sharks up to 60 feet long, but these are unconfirmed. Despite its size, this shark is harmless to humans.
Look For: A huge shark with a flat, blunt head, a humped back, and ridges along the sides. Blue-gray on back with grid of light spots and lines; whitish or yellow below.
Length: 45'.
Habitat: Open sea.
Range: In Atlantic from New York southward, including Gulf of Mexico. In Pacific from southern California south to Gulf of California.
